The other day I came across a blog post titled, “Moms, put on your swimsuit!”
The post was about moms getting past their self consciousness and getting in their swimsuits and making memories with their kids this summer.
It was a great post and really hit home with me.
A couple of weekends ago we took a trip to the Audubon Zoo with Jase.
There was a neat little splash pad/water area and we all changed into our swimsuits and headed towards the fun!!! However, once we got to the action I spotted a cozy little area where some other moms where gathered and sat with my towel wrapped around me.
I watched Jase and Jarred go down the slides and splash through the water gushing up from the ground. Jase was having a BLAST! Every once in a while they would look over, and I would give them a little wave and thumbs up, like moms do. I kept thinking that I kind of wanted to join the fun, but I just had a baby 6 weeks ago and was feeling pretty self conscious.
Then it hit me, “What am I doing? Am I really missing out on fun with my son because I am not feeling like I LOOK my best?
Or because I feel like I am a MOM and I am suppose to just sit, watch, and give the smile and thumbs up?”
NO, I am going to get out there! I want to be IN THE FUN, IN THE GAME, not just watching from the sidelines! I took off the towel and went and found Jarred and Jase.
I grabbed Jase up and took him on every slide out there and screamed, laughed, ran, and had FUN with him! A few times I looked down and I could see in his little eyes that he was excited that his mom was doing something like this with him!
It taught me a huge lesson that day that I want to remember from here on out: MOMS NEED TO BE IN THE GAME, NOT ON THE SIDELINES!
We need to put aside our self conscious thoughts and worries…what people think, what we feel we are “suppose to do” as moms, and just down right have fun engaging in precious memories with our kids when those moments present themselves!
I don’t want to look back one day and regret not taking advantage of an opportunity to make a fun memory!
So today at Dick’s Sporting Goods while I was in my “mom mode” looking for something particular in a hurry, pushing the baby in the buggy (you know the
drill moms) Jase spots the track that’s been painted on the floor in the shoe section and screams,
“Mom, will you do laps with me???!!” My first thought was to say, “No Jase we need to hurry and check out and get home,” but I stopped myself and thought,
“I AM GETTING IN THE GAME!”
I lined up with him and he said, “On your mark, get set, GO!”
We made 3 or 4 laps with Annie watching from the buggy and other shoppers probably wondering what in the world all the screaming and laughing was about…
And it was about a mom deciding to not miss those opportunities to have fun with her kids!
Moms can be fun, and being in those memories matter!
I hope you enjoyed this! I am so excited about this Wednesday also, I will be joining Josh Taylor for the weekly podcast. We will talk about this and more.
